Migrants need better digital services

Migrants and refugees rely heavily on social media platforms like Facebook and messaging platforms such as WhatsApp for communication and information exchange. But they are hampered by language barriers and poor digital services.

Those are among the key findings of the Digital Literacy Focus Groups project auspiced by Ballina Region for Refugees and funded by the Northern Rivers Community Foundation. The project addresses digital disparities among culturally and linguistically diverse communities in Northern New South Wales.

Four focus groups involved 58 participants across Kingscliff, Ballina, Byron, and Lismore TAFE Adult Migrant English Program classes.

The findings reveal challenges such as language barriers and limited digital access in regional areas, underscoring the need for accessible information in native languages and infrastructure upgrades.

Participants expressed a strong desire for tailored digital literacy programs, along with better internet service in regional areas.

The project co-ordinator, Masters of Social Work student Sofia Marin, said recommendations include:

  1. Prioritising translation initiatives to ensure essential information is accessible in multiple languages, particularly focusing on health, government, and safety information.
  2. Developing comprehensive digital literacy programs tailored to the diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, offering practical, hands-on learning experiences.
  3. Advocating for infrastructure upgrades to enhance internet connectivity in regional areas and provide subsidised or free access to essential digital tools.
  4. Strengthening community networks and support through peer-led digital training and community events.
  5. Cultivating digital leadership within communities through leadership training programs, empowering community members to drive grassroots digital initiatives and advocate for their community’s needs.
