Tweed welcomes new family

After an anxious wait, it was all smiles and hugs when Tweed Welcomes Refugees met their family from Syria at Brisbane Airport in mid-March.

The family’s arrival had been delayed, but in the end, TWR were glad they didn’t arrive in the middle of cyclone Alfred.

It was a busy opening few weeks, but the family of four is settling in well. Fatemah and her children Amal and Mohamad as well as Fatemah’s sister Tunis now live in Murwillumbah. The children started attending school within a week and it wasn’t long before they enjoyed their first school holidays.

Fatemah and Tunis wasted no time and have started English classes at TAFE.

It has been a warm welcome by neighbours as the family enjoy exploring their new local surroundings. A few happy occasions were getting together with other recently arrived Syrian families in the region and attending the Youth Festival in Murwillumbah as well as celebrating the end of Ramadan.

If you see them in the community, please share a smile and make them feel welcome.
