Locals step up to help Afghan girl

Two local people have offered to pay the internet costs of a young Afghan teenager who is learning English online.

We ran a story in our February Bulletin asking for help to pay the $15 monthly fee, and it didn’t take long to yield results.

Manizha is being tutored online by a volunteer teacher recruited by Northern Rivers for Refugees, but the monthly fee was beyond her family.

Manizha lives in Central Afghanistan and, like other women, she is denied education opportunities by the oppressive Taliban regime. She is a member of a poor Hazara family with a father who has been subjected to extreme violence by the Taliban.

Northern Rivers journalist and activist Mark Isaacs is delighted after putting out the call for help.
